Original SLED Report
If the applicant is cleared for licensure, the South Carolina Department of Insurance will notify the applicant by letter.  When the applicant receives the Department's letter, the applicant can proceed with the examination and any other requirements under Section II.

II. If the applicant has not been convicted of a crime, either a misdemeanor or felony, the following is required.

  1. Application for Individual License, Form 3506 [pdf 203k]  This application is only for resident licensed producers amending their license and for producers moving to South Carolina from another state.  New resident applicants must apply online at https://online.doi.sc.gov/Eng/Public/Common/OnlineServices.aspx.  
     
     
  2. License fee of $25
    The fee is not pro-rated and is non-refundable and non-transferable.
     
  3. Original SLED Report
     
  4. Exam Report from PSI, if applicable.
    The exam report expires 12 months after the date of issuance.

    Exam Content Outlines

    Contact PSI directly at 800-733-9267 or online at www.psiexams.com to register for the state licensing examination.
     
  5. Proof of Series 6 or 7
    Proof of Series 6 or 7 must be provided if the applicant is applying for variable contracts.  A copy of the NASD Central Registration Directory (CRD) "print screen" showing passage of the appropriate exam is acceptable.  The applicant's CRD number must be on the application.
  6. Title producers only. Financial Interest Disclosure, Form 3600 [pdf 602k]
  7. Pre-Need producers only.
  • Only the Life Exam is required.
  • A copy of your SC Funeral Director's license.
  • Letter of employment from SC licensed funeral home.

If the applicant was previously licensed as a resident producer in another state and is applying for a South Carolina resident license, items 1-3 from above and if not able to verify on the State Producer Licensing Database, a letter of clearance is required.

Non-Resident Producer

  1. Nonresident applicants must apply online at http://www.nipr.com/.

  2. Application for Individual License, Form 3506 [pdf 118k]

  3. License fee of $25

  4. Home State Certification
    If license status cannot be verified on the State Producer Licensing Database (SPLD), certification from the applicant's home state will be required.
     
  5. Proof of Series 6 or 7
    If the applicant is applying for variable contracts, their NASD Central Registration Directory (CRD) number must be on the application.

License Renewal - Online Renewal

 

Renewal Option 1: SCDOI Online Services

  1. Click SCDOI Online Services.
    This link is also available at the top left corner of the home page.
     
  2. Under the General Public heading scroll down to "Renew Individual License."
     
  3. Enter your social security number and birth date information.
     
  4. Choose the License you are renewing.
     
  5. Follow the instructions on the screen.
     
  6. Select payment option.
     
  7. Once the renewal is completed, a confirmation page will be displayed.
    Please print and keep this page as your receipt.

Fees may be paid by electronic check, or by credit card. If paid by credit card, a $1.43 processing fee will be added to the $25 license renewal fee.

Renewal Option 2: NIPR

  1. Go ONLINE to renew at: www.nipr.com
     
  2. Follow NIPR's online instructions.
     
  3. Individuals renewing through NIPR must pay a $5 renewal transaction fee.
     
  4. Once the online renewal is completed, NIPR will send an email confirming that the renewal has been accepted. Please keep NIPR's email as your receipt.
    Do not send verification to the Department.

Check the Status of Your Renewal

  1. Click SC Licensee Look Up .
    A SC Licensee button is also available on the left side of the home page.
     
  2. Click Search for individuals.
     
  3. Key in the license number OR the individual's last and first name.
     
  4. When the next screen displays, click on the individual's name.
     
  5. Scroll down to license type and click. The renewal status will be reflected on the next page.

Appointments

Requirements

 All appointments must be submitted by the appointing insurance company; not the licensee.  Appointments, including special and travel and baggage appointments, cannot be requested until an active South Carolina Producer license is in place.  Appointment filing fees are nonrefundable.

The insurance company must submit appointments electronically through the National Insurance Producer Registry (NIPR) at http://www.nipr.com/gateway.htm.  If the sponsoring insurance company is unable to appoint electronically, the company must submit the following original documentation to the Department.  This is required for both new and amended appointments.

License, Appointment and Renewal Fees

The renewal date for Unlimited Lines Producer appointments and Limited Lines Producer licenses and appointments is September 1 of even-numbered years. The renewal fee is the same as the appointment fee.

Cancellation

The insurer must cancel appointments electronically through the National Insurance Producer Registry (NIPR).  If the insurer is unable to cancel electronically, the insurer must submit to the Department an original South Carolina Appointment/Termination Form, Form 3505 [257k]

Address Change Request

South Carolina law requires all licensees to notify the Department of any change in address within (30) days.  Failure to notify the Department with the 30-day statutory timeframe constitutes a violation of the South Carolina insurance laws.  It is the statutory responsibility of the licensees to make certain their mailing, home and/or business address records with the South Carolina Department of Insurance are up-to-date.  Having inaccurate address and other contact information on file with the Department may result in licensees not receiving important notices and other communications.  Licensees may be subject to administrative disciplinary action for not timely notifying the Department of an address change.  In accordance with Section 38-2-10 of the South Carolina Code of Laws, individuals could be subject to administrative penalties up to $2,500 for each violation of South Carolina insurance laws.

Effective July 1, 2009, the Department will no longer accept paper requests for address changes. 

Procedures for Making an Address Change

  1. Go to Address Change Request (ACR) page on the National Insurance Producer Registry (NIPR) website.

  3. Click "Sign In" and follow the on-screen instructions.

Printing Licenses

The Department will no longer print or mail hard copies of licenses.  Licensed individuals must print copies of their license via the Department's SCDOI Online Services found on our website.  There is no charge for printing the licenses, and copies of duplicate or amended licenses can be obtained at anytime.

  1. Click SCDOI Online Services.
    This link is also available at the top left corner of the home page.
     
  2. Select "Print License" under the General Public heading.
     
  3. You must accept the License Certification Terms of Use before proceeding.  If you agree with the terms, click "I Accept" at the bottom of the page.
     
  4. Key in the Social Security Number and Date of Birth in the format as shown next the fields and then click "Login."
     
  5. Choose License Type in the drop down menu and then click "next."
     
  6. Click "Print."

The Department will no longer print or mail hard copies of Letters of Certification.  Licensed individuals must print copies of their certification letters via the Department's SCDOI Online Services found on our website.  There is no charge for printing the letters, and copies of duplicate or amended letters can be obtained at anytime.

  2. Select "Generate Certificate of Authority/Letters of Clearance for Individuals" under the General Public heading.
     
  3. You must accept the License Certification Terms of Use before proceeding.  If you agree with the terms, click "I Accept" at the bottom of the page.
     
  4. Enter the Social Security Number and Date of Birth in the format as shown next the fields on the page and then click "Next."
     
  5. Select the State(s) for the Letter of Certification and then click "Next."
     
  6. Click "Continue" on the Application Fees page.
     
  7. Click "Save and Print Letter" on the Confirmation page.
    The Letter of Certification will open in PDF format.

License or Appointment Verification

  1. Click Search SCDOI Database.
    This link is also available at the top of the home page.
     
  2. Click "Search for Individuals."
     
  3. Enter the Individual Number or Last Name and then click "Search."
     
  4. Click on the individual's name.
     
  5. Click on "Type of License" (in blue) to the see the license and appointment information.
