- The requirement for an agency license does not apply to any agency owned by, and operated under, the name of an individual licensed producer, so long as no other person, firm or entity has any interest in, or affiliation with, the business of the individual producer or their agency. This type of agency is considered a sole proprietorship.
- No such agency shall be licensed under a name which is likely to lead a person of average intelligence to believe that the agency is an insurer, an agency of any government, or a club, fraternity, association, or social or military organization, or which is otherwise deceptive or misleading. Foreign corporations, limited partnerships and other entities required by law to be registered with the South Carolina Secretary of State must be registered before an agency license will be issued.
- Only one license is required for each agency and a separate license is not required for branch office locations unless the agency has more than one FEIN number.
- Any changes made within the agency that differ from the information on the initial agency application (i.e., name change, change in ownership, licensed producer, etc.) must be submitted in writing to the South Carolina Department of Insurance.

Renewals for agency licenses are due in January of even numbered years. Agencies may renew online through the National Insurance Producer Registry (NIPR) at www.nipr.com or by submitting a paper renewal to the Department.
Agencies renewing online through NIPR will receive immediate confirmation of renewal status. However, there is a processing fee of $5.00 for renewals processed through NIPR.
Agencies renewing by paper must submit the following information. Renewals submitted by paper will be manually processed by the licensing staff. Agencies choosing to renew by submitting a paper application should allow sufficient time for the renewal to be manually processed. Non-Resident Agencies are not required to submit a Letter of Certification. An agency must have at least one licensed and appointed producer to maintain the agency license.
- License Renewal Application, Form 3512 [pdf 62k]
- $40 Renewal Fee
If the fee and completed form is not received in the Department by January 31 of the even numbered year, the license must be canceled. Reinstatement for any canceled agency license is subject to a penalty fee of $40 plus a license fee of $40.
Agency licenses are continuous, if not cancelled or revoked. Therefore, a new license will not be issued. Your cancelled check, or if applying online, your confirmation through NIPR will serve as your receipt. Please make certain all spaces on the Renewal Application are completed and the fee is paid. Incomplete renewals will not be accepted and will be returned.
