  2. License fee of $80.00
If you are a resident of a state that charges a fee in excess of $80, that rate will be assessed, since fees are retaliatory under South Carolina Law.

If the applicant's home state does not require an adjuster examination, then a certificate can be used from another state where the applicant is licensed and has taken and passed an adjuster examination.  If the above cannot be provided, then the applicant will be required to pass South Carolina's adjuster examination. Registration for South Carolina's adjuster examination is done through PSI Services LLC.  Contact PSI directly at 800-733-9267 or online at www.psiexams.com.

Address Change Request

South Carolina law requires all licensees to notify the Department of any change in address within (30) days.  Failure to notify the Department with the 30-day statutory timeframe constitutes a violation of the South Carolina insurance laws.  It is the statutory responsibility of the licensees to make certain their mailing, home and/or business address records with the South Carolina Department of Insurance are up-to-date.  Having an inaccurate address and other contact information on file with the Department may result in licensees not receiving important notices and other communications.  Licensees may be subject to administrative disciplinary action for not timely notifying the Department of an address change.  In accordance with Section 38-2-10 of the South Carolina Code of Laws, individuals could be subject to administrative penalties up to $2,500 for each violation of South Carolina insurance laws.

Effective July 1, 2009, the Department will no longer accept paper requests for address changes.  If you are licensed in your home state, follow Section A procedures.  If you are not licensed in your home state, follow Section B procedures.

Emergency Adjusters

Procedures

The South Carolina Department of Insurance coordinates recovery efforts with the State's Adjutant General's Emergency Preparedness Program.  If South Carolina incurs damages from a natural disaster requiring the entry of unlicensed non-resident emergency adjusters, the following emergency adjuster procedures must be followed before deploying emergency adjusters into our state.

Public Adjusters who do not possess a South Carolina resident or non-resident public insurance adjuster license are not allowed to conduct public adjuster activities in South Carolina.  Individuals seeking to perform public adjuster activities in this state must first become licensed as a resident or non-resident public adjuster.  Public Adjuster applications are available by clicking here.

  1. The Director of Insurance, pursuant to S.C. Code Ann., Regulation 69-1, must first determine that the potential for an emergency situation exists.

  2. Once the Director of Insurance has declared an emergency, insurers may immediately appoint emergency adjusters without them first being authorized by the Department.  Before appointing emergency adjusters, however, insurers must first utilize licensed resident and licensed non-resident South Carolina adjusters to their fullest extent in handling catastrophe claims.

Insurers are allowed up to 48 hours after an emergency adjuster has been appointed to complete the Emergency Adjuster Appointment Application and file it with the Department.  The completed application can be faxed or mailed to the Department.

Appointment as an Emergency Adjuster Application

  3. The initial emergency adjuster appointment may not exceed 120 days from the date of the initial appointment.  After 120 days has lapsed, insurers must obtain written authorization from the Department of Insurance before an appointed emergency adjuster can continue to adjust South Carolina catastrophe claims.

General Information

  • Emergency adjusters must keep in their possession at all times a copy of the Appointment as an Emergency Adjuster application from the appointing insurer along with the South Carolina Department of Insurance's disaster permit.  Adjusters must have this documentation in order to be eligible to adjust catastrophe claims.  Emergency adjusters must also be able to present a copy of their driver's license or other valid picture identification upon the request of any state or federal emergency enforcement authority.  State and/or federal emergency enforcement authority may ask emergency adjusters to produce this information and individuals who cannot will be automatically subject to disqualification from conducting emergency adjusting activities in South Carolina and their emergency licensing privileges will be revoked immediately.

  • All licensed and emergency adjusters must cooperate fully with county and municipal authorities and communicate entry or access problems through their respective insurer.

  • Information provided on the emergency adjuster application will be subject to verification with each emergency adjuster's state of domicile in order to confirm the information provided to our department. Submission of false or fraudulent information to the Department will result in administrative disciplinary action reportable to state and federal authorities, as applicable.

  • Insurers are responsible for the actions of their agents/adjusters and will be held accountable for such acts and/or omissions.
